Helping Your Child’s Feet Smell Better

Foot odor is caused by bacteria that feasts on oils and dead skin cells. These bacteria can collect and multiply easily in damp and dark places like sweaty shoes, socks, and sweaty feet, and then produce odorous organic acids during their process of dispelling waste. For some people, the type of bacteria they collect is called Kyetococcus sedentarius, which also produces volatile sulfur compounds and can be excessively rank. A key to avoiding or reducing putrid-smelling feet is keeping the feet as dry and clean as possible. Make sure your child washes their feet every day and especially after physical activity that causes them to sweat. Get them moisture-wicking socks that keep sweat off the skin and allow the feet to breathe. Check to make sure they wear fresh socks every day as well. Ensure that the shoes they wear are not too tight, and switch out shoes and sneakers every day to allow them to dry out before wearing them again. Don’t allow them to share footwear, socks, or towels with anyone. If you believe your child’s feet sweat excessively, they may have a condition known as hyperhidrosis which can be treated by a podiatrist who can also offer additional tips on foot hygiene and care.

Types of Ankle Sprains

Ankle sprains occur when one or more ligaments that support the ankle are overstretched or torn. This often happens during a sudden twisting of the ankle while walking or running, or due to a direct impact while playing sports. There are three types of ankle sprains. A lateral sprain is the most common type of ankle sprain, as the small lateral ligaments along the outside of the ankle are the most easily injured due to their size and lower strength and resilience relative to other ligaments in the ankle. Another type of sprain is a medial ankle sprain, which affects the ligaments along the inside of the ankle. A high ankle sprain is relatively rare and affects the ligaments located above the ankle joint and between the two leg bones. A podiatrist can determine the type and severity of your sprain and find the right treatments for you.

How Does an Ankle Sprain Occur?

Ankle sprains are the result of a tear in the ligaments within the ankle. These injuries may happen when you make a rapid shifting movement while your foot is planted. A less common way to sprain your ankle is when your ankle rolls inward while your foot turns outward.

What Are the Symptoms?

  • Pain at the sight of the tear
  • Bruising/Swelling
  • Ankle area is tender to touch
  • In severe cases, may hear/feel something tear
  • Skin discoloration

Treatment of a Sprain

When Walking Normally Is No Easy Feat

Walking may not seem to be a complex activity, however, several body functions, structures, and systems need to work together seamlessly to allow a person to walk normally. A person’s gait (way of walking) can be affected by genetic factors, injuries, physical abnormalities or conditions affecting the feet and legs, illnesses, inner ear problems, and age. These abnormal gait patterns may be temporary or permanent, usually falling into one of five categories. When someone drags their feet, or looks stiff while walking, this can indicate a spastic gait. When legs bend inwardly or hit each other during walking, this is known as a scissors gait. If a person’s toes scrape against or point towards the ground, they may have a steppage gait. Moving from side-to-side with short steps is indicative of a waddling gait. A propulsive gait is walking with a stooping, stiff posture, with the head and neck pushed forward. Using state-of-the-art technology, a podiatrist can perform a biomechanical assessment and gait analysis. Custom orthotics and other methods can be used to help improve feet function and ease any associated pain—including treating any underlying foot condition.

What Are Orthotics?

Types of Foot Blisters

Blisters are fluid-filled bubbles of skin that can form anywhere on the body.  Most blisters on the feet and toes are caused by friction from shoes or socks rubbing repeatedly over a concentrated area of skin. The top layer of skin separates from the layers of skin underneath it and the empty space fills with a fluid called serum or plasma. The fluid cushions and protects the raw skin underneath the blister.  Most blisters are clear and filled with serum. Sometimes, a blister can appear red or black. This is indicative of blood vessel damage, in addition to skin damage. Infected blisters may have a white or yellow tinge due to pus forming and collecting beneath the blister. Most blisters heal on their own, but if you have a blister that appears to be infected, it is strongly suggested that you see a podiatrist for treatment.

Foot Blisters

Foot blisters develop as a result of constantly wearing tight or ill-fitting footwear. This happens due to the constant rubbing from the shoe, which can often lead to pain.

What Are Foot Blisters?

A foot blister is a small fluid-filled pocket that forms on the upper-most layer of the skin. Blisters are filled with clear fluid and can lead to blood drainage or pus if the area becomes infected.

How Do Blisters Form?

Blisters on the feet are often the result of constant friction of skin and material, usually by shoe rubbing. Walking in sandals, boots, or shoes that don’t fit properly for long periods of time can result in a blister. Having consistent foot moisture and humidity can easily lead to blister formation.

Prevention & Treatment

It is important to properly care for the affected area in order to prevent infection and ease the pain. Do not lance the blister and use a Band-Aid to provide pain relief. Also, be sure to keep your feet dry and wear proper fitting shoes. If you see blood or pus in a blister, seek assistance from a podiatrist.
